| Shubee says... >My goal is to remove from special relativity everything that is >confused, unnecessary and not amenable to experimental verification. >For example, I don't consider Lorentz coordinates to be as sacrosanct >as Einstein believed they were. Or do you believe it's an >indispensable requirement for physics teachers to use easily >misunderstood oxymoronic phrases such "moving clocks run slow"? Einstein didn't consider "Lorentz coordinates" to be sacrosanct. He developed Special Relativity using inertial reference frames, because physics is simpler in those frames. The Lorentz transformations are only important because they relate coordinates in two different inertial reference frames. Einstein generalized his physics to arbitrary coordinate systems in his General Relativity. As for phrases such as "moving clocks run slow", that phrase isn't used by physicists. It's only used in introductory discussions of relativity. I agree that it is misleading, but so is the opposite approach, which is to assume that relativity is nothing but artifacts of using strangely synchronized clocks. Relativity predicts that regardless of how you synchronize clocks: Two clocks, A and B are initially at rest in some inertial reference frame. Clock A remains at rest. Clock B moves off at some large speed v, turns around, and comes back at speed v (speeds measured relative to A). When they get back together, we compare the elapsed times on clocks A and B. The prediction of relativity is that (elapsed time on B)/(elapsed time on A) = square-root(1-(v/c)^2). -- Daryl McCullough Ithaca, NY |
